THC: What It Is and How to Take It
New to cannabis? Start here. THC is the compound behind the classic cannabis experience. This plain-language guide explains what it is, the ways you can take it, and what to expect, so you can shop with confidence.
What is THC?
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the most abundant and most-researched compound in cannabis, and the one responsible for the intoxicating "high." It is the cannabinoid measured by the THC % you see on every product label. A higher percentage means a more potent product.
THC comes in many formats, from dried flower you inhale to gummies you eat, and the format changes how fast you feel it and how long it lasts. Cannabis is for adults 19+.

New to THC? Start low, go slow.
If you are just starting out, try a low dose, about 2.5 to 5 mg of THC, and wait the full onset time before taking more. Edibles especially can sneak up on you: many people take a second dose too soon and feel more than they wanted. You can always have more; you cannot have less.
THC questions, answered
The things new customers ask us most.
Will THC get me high?
Yes. THC is the intoxicating cannabinoid, so it produces the "high" associated with cannabis. How strong that feels depends on the product THC %, the format, your dose, and your own tolerance. If you would prefer little to no intoxication, look at CBD-forward products instead.
How much THC should a beginner take?
A common starting point is 2.5 to 5 mg of THC for edibles, or a single small inhale of flower or vapour. Wait the full onset time before having more. Start low, go slow, and increase only once you know how a product affects you.
How long does THC last?
It depends on the format. Inhaled THC (flower, vapes) is felt within minutes and lasts 1 to 3 hours. Edibles and capsules take 30 to 90 minutes to begin and can last 4 to 8 hours. Beverages usually land somewhere in between.
How long does THC stay in your system?
The effects wear off in hours, but THC can be detectable on a drug test much longer, often days for occasional use and weeks for frequent use. If you may be tested, plan accordingly.
What is the difference between THC and CBD?
THC is intoxicating and produces a high; CBD is non-intoxicating and does not. Many products combine both. See our CBD guide to compare.
